Memsource Editor

In-Context Preview

The In-context Preview feature offers a real-time preview of original or translated text directly in the Memsource Editor.

Clicking on a segment to be translated highlights the respective text in the preview window and displays the position of the translated segment within the document.

Clicking on text within the preview causes the translation grid to indicate the corresponding segment for editing.

During QA, clicking on a warning navigates the linguist to the position of the warning within the document.

Tables, columns, various graphics, formatting, and fonts are supported. The feature is meant to provide context when translating and is not a perfect representation of the original or completed document; some visual differences are expected. It can also be influenced by enabling/disabling Allow loading of external content in editors option in Access and Security settings.

The preview also has zoom functionality as well as a right-click context menu.

The in-context preview in the web browser may be affected by the editor having only a portion of segments loaded at a given time; skipping over large groups of segments can lead to an incomplete preview.

Scrolling through the translation table and loading segments from the beginning of a major section (e.g. a chapter) or from the beginning of a job improves the preview.

Supported file types

Previews are not be generated for unsupported file types.

  • AsciiDoc

  • DITA

  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

  • HTML

  • IDML

  • Markdown

  • Microsoft Excel (including multilingual files)

  • Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Microsoft Word

  • RTF

  • XML with style sheets (including multilingual files)

If a preview can not be generated due to unsupported file type or preview limits are exceeded, a preview can be downloaded from the Document menu but will not be in the original file type.

Preview for InDesign Files

Memsource offers a limited version of live in-context preview for InDesign files. The preview supports all in-context preview functions (source and target preview, real-time changes, navigating from the translation table to the preview window and the other way round, and zoom) and it supports a wide range of InDesign components.

  • Images are displayed for imported IDML files with embedded images.

  • The maximum size for any image is 500 KB, and the total size for all images must be 10 MB or less.

Static Preview as PDF

Preview PDFs of your IDML files can be viewed in Memsource Editor with Frontlab Integration. This is not a live in-context preview, but users are able to generate a PDF-based preview of translated IDML files.

To generate the preview:

  • From the Document menu, select Preview Translation.

If the source file is an IDML file, Memsource generates and opens a PDF file of the preview.

Preview Options

To change preview options for supported file types, follow these steps:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Preview.

    Options are presented.

  2. Select:

    • Disable to turn off the Preview.

    • Source to view the source file in the preview.

    • Target to view the target file in the preview.

If the target segment in the translation grid is empty, the target preview will show the original text. When editing, it is shown in the target preview. Changes made in the translated segments are immediately presented.
