Machine Translation

Memsource offers integrations with many machine translation providers. It is possible to use machine translation via the Memsource Translate (Beta) solution or by setting up a connection directly with a third-party MT engine.

Please note: Microsoft Translator with Feedback and Manage MT via Memsource have been deprecated.

You can find the Machine Translation Engines settings when you click on Setup (the Gear icon) in the top right-hand corner of your window. Scroll down to the Integrations section where you will find the Machine Translation Engines page.

Memsource Translate (Beta)

This solution automatically selects the best-performing engine for a project, based on the language pair.

  • 69 language pairs supported
  • Centralized MT engine management—purchase MT characters in Memsource and monitor your character* usage.
  • Google Translate and Microsoft Translator are currently supported, with more engines to follow.
  • Automatically available in every account.
  • Free characters—a one-off offer for new users to get you started. The number of free characters varies in each edition (Ultimate: 2M, Team and Academic: 500k, Team Start: 250k, Personal: 50k)
  • The default engine for all new Memsource users.

* The character count in MT engines includes spaces. (The character count in Memsource analysis does not include spaces.)

If you would prefer to purchase characters directly through Google or Microsoft, you will need to set up engines directly through these providers. For more information, please read our articles for setting up Google Translate and Microsoft Translator.

You can still use Microsoft Translator and its free characters (provided by Microsoft). To do this, however, you'll need to disable Memsource Translate and set up the Microsoft Translator account.

Monitoring Character Usage

On the Machine Translation's Settings page, you will see a usage chart for the different MT engines in your account.  You can view data for a specific engine by deselecting the names of the other engines at the bottom of the chart. Currently, the chart can only display data from the past 30 days.

Please note: By default, Project Managers will only be able to see data related to projects they have created. For PMs to see all data for all projects in an organization, an Admin user for the organization will need to adjust the user settings by clicking on Users on the left side of the screen. Select the appropriate user and click Edit. Near the bottom of the page is the section Homepage Dashboards, where you will be able to change the data that Project Managers can see.

Remaining Characters

For Memsource Translate, the Remaining Characters column shows the number of characters available to use with Memsource Translate. As you use the characters, this number will decrease. Find out how to purchase more Memsource Translate characters.

For Third-party Machine Translation Engines, the Remaining Characters column shows the remaining characters available for the MTQE feature (if enabled). As the MTQE characters are used, this number will decrease. Find out how to purchase more MTQE characters.

Third-party MT Engines

Memsource does not provide machine translation of its own but offers access to 3rd-party machine translation engines via an API. If you intend to use MT in Memsource, please make sure you read and understand the terms and conditions of the given MT provider.

To set up a new machine translation engine, go to Memsource, and select Machine Translation section under Setup. Please note that only Administrator users can see and access this section. Once your new machine translation engine has been configured under Setup, make sure it is also enabled in the Settings of a project. This will make it generally available for all users working with the project, including Linguists translating that project's jobs in the Memsource Editor.

Please note that some of the machine translation engines listed here are not for public use, and some are accessible only for specific editions.
